42 U.S.C. § 247b–9 — Diabetes in children and youth

(a) Surveillance on juvenile diabetes The Secretary, acting through the CDC Director, must develop a sentinel system — an early-tracking system — to collect data on juvenile diabetes, including how common and how new it is, and must set up a national database for that data. (b) Type 2 diabetes in youth The Secretary must carry out a national public health effort to address type 2 diabetes in youth, including: (1) improving surveillance systems and expanding research to better measure how common type 2 diabetes is among youth, and to find out how often it is wrongly diagnosed as type 1 diabetes; and (2) developing and improving laboratory methods to help diagnose, treat, and prevent diabetes, including — but not limited to — developing non-invasive ways to monitor blood glucose to prevent hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar), and improving existing glucose meters. (c) Authorization of appropriations Congress authorized whatever sums were necessary to carry out this section for each fiscal year from 2001 through 2005.
