42 U.S.C. § 280g–2 — Childhood malignancies

(a) In general: The Secretary, acting as appropriate through the Director of the CDC and the Director of the NIH, must study environmental and other risk factors for childhood cancers (including bone cancers, leukemias, brain and central nervous system tumors, lymphomas, soft tissue sarcomas, and other malignancies) and carry out projects to improve outcomes for children with these cancers and related problems, including limb loss, anemia, rehabilitation, and palliative care. The Secretary does this directly and through grants or contracts. (b) Certain activities: These include (1) expanding current data collection and population surveillance to cover childhood cancers nationally; (2) developing a uniform reporting system where treating physicians, hospitals, clinics, and States report childhood cancer diagnoses, including relevant epidemiological data; and (3) supporting the National Limb Loss Information Center to help address the immediate and lasting needs of people who had childhood cancers, to help prevent or reduce how disabling those cancers become. (c) Coordination of activities: The Secretary must make sure this section's activities are coordinated, as appropriate, with other Public Health Service agencies working on childhood cancers and limb loss. (d) Definition: "Childhood cancer" means a range of different malignancies that vary by tissue type, disease site, origin, race, sex, and age. The Secretary may revise this definition as the Secretary determines appropriate. (e) Authorization of appropriations: Congress may spend whatever sums are necessary for each of fiscal years 2001 through 2005.
