42 U.S.C. § 285c–2 — Division Directors for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases, Digestive Diseases and Nutrition, and Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases; functions

(a)(1) The Institute must have three Division Directors: one for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases; one for Digestive Diseases and Nutrition; and one for Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases. Under the Institute Director's supervision, each must: (A) build a coordinated plan — including spending recommendations — for NIH's research and training on their disease area; (B) assess whether NIH's management approach to their disease area is adequate, and improve it if needed; (C) monitor and review NIH spending on their disease area; and (D) identify research opportunities in their disease area and recommend how to use them. (2) The Institute's Director must send NIH's Director the Division Directors' plans, recommendations, and reviews from (A) through (D), along with any comments the Institute's Director thinks appropriate. (b) Acting through these three Division Directors, the Institute's Director must: (1) run support programs for research and training (other than Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award training) on diagnosing, preventing, and treating diabetes, endocrine and metabolic diseases, digestive diseases and nutrition disorders, and kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases — including training in medical schools, graduate clinical training, epidemiology training and studies, clinical trials, and interdisciplinary research; and (2) set up programs to evaluate, plan, and share knowledge related to that research and training.
