42 U.S.C. § 285e–2 — Alzheimer’s Disease centers

(a) Cooperative agreements and grants for establishing and supporting: (1) The Institute's Director may enter into cooperative agreements with, and give grants to, public or private nonprofit groups (including university medical centers) to pay for part or all of the cost of planning, starting, or strengthening centers — and to fund their basic operations, including staffing. These centers do basic and clinical research (including multidisciplinary research), training, and demonstrations of advanced diagnosis, prevention, and treatment methods for Alzheimer's disease. (2) Any such agreement or grant must follow policies the Director of NIH sets, and must happen after consulting the Institute's advisory council. (b) Use of federal payments: (1) Payments made under an agreement or grant in subsection (a) may, for Alzheimer's disease, pay for — (A) diagnostic exams, patient assessments, patient care costs, and other research costs; (B) training, including for allied health professionals; (C) diagnostic and treatment clinics serving minority, rural, and other underserved populations; (D) public education activities; and (E) sharing information. (2) "Training" here does not include the research training covered by Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards under section 288. (c) Support period: Support for a center lasts up to five years at a time. The Director can extend it for more five-year periods if a peer-review group reviews the center's work and recommends the extension.
