42 U.S.C. § 295f–3 — Fellowship training in applied public health epidemiology, public health laboratory science, public health informatics, and expansion of the Epidemic Intelligence Service

(a) In general The Secretary may work on documented workforce shortages in state and local health departments in applied public health epidemiology, public health laboratory science, and informatics, and may expand the Epidemic Intelligence Service. (b) Specific uses To do this, the Secretary must expand existing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention fellowship programs in a way designed to fix those shortages. (c) Other programs The Secretary may also expand other applied epidemiology training programs that share similar goals with the programs in subsection (b). (d) Work obligation Taking part in these fellowship programs counts as service toward satisfying work obligations in contracts under section 254q–1(j). (e) General support Grant money under this section may also expand the Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to better support public health systems at every level of government. (f) Authorization of appropriations Congress may spend $39,500,000 each year from 2010 through 2013 to carry out this section, split as: (1) $5,000,000 each year for epidemiology fellowship activities under subsections (b) and (c); (2) $5,000,000 each year for laboratory fellowship programs under subsection (b); (3) $5,000,000 each year for the Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program under subsection (e); and (4) $24,500,000 for expanding the Epidemic Intelligence Service under subsection (a).
