42 U.S.C. § 300b–13 — Interagency Coordinating Committee on Newborn and Child Screening

(a) Purpose: This section exists to: (1) review existing programs and infrastructure — including birth-defects and developmental-disabilities work under section 247b–4 — to recommend programs for collecting, analyzing, and sharing data on the heritable disorders the Advisory Committee (section 300b–10) recommends, including how common they are and the poor health outcomes they cause; and (2) recommend setting up regional centers to do applied research on effective ways to prevent those poor health outcomes, and to educate the public about them. (b) Establishment: The Secretary must set up an Interagency Coordinating Committee on Newborn and Child Screening to carry out this purpose. (c) Composition: The Committee is made up of the Director of the CDC, the Administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Commissioner of Food and Drugs, and the Director of the NIH — or people they designate. (d) Activities: The Committee must: (1) report its recommendations, related to the purpose in subsection (a), to the Secretary and the relevant congressional committees; and (2) carry out any other activities the Secretary decides are appropriate.
