42 U.S.C. § 300b–6 — Applied technology

This section tells the Secretary of Health and Human Services what to do about genetic diseases. The work must be done through a specific administrative unit. First, the Secretary must study genetic diseases across the population. This means tracking how common each disease is and how bad it is. The goal is to figure out how much diagnosis, treatment, control, screening, and counseling is needed. Second, using what that study finds, the Secretary must build programs for states to use. Each program must combine diagnosis, treatment, and control of the disease, screening for it, and counseling for people who have it. Third, again using the study's findings, the Secretary must give states technical help to put these programs into action. The Secretary must also train the staff who will run them. To pay for all this, the Secretary may use money set aside under section 702(a) of this title. The Secretary can give that money out as grants or contracts to public agencies or nonprofit organizations, including money for test projects (demonstration projects).
