42 U.S.C. § 300ee–2 — Information for health and public safety workers

(a) Development and dissemination of guidelines Within 90 days after November 4, 1988, the Secretary -- acting through the Director of the CDC -- must develop, issue, and share emergency guidelines with all health workers and public safety workers (including emergency responders) nationwide. The guidelines must cover: (1) ways to reduce the risk, in the workplace, of getting infected with the AIDS virus, and (2) situations where exposure to the virus might happen. (b) Use in occupational standards The Secretary must send these guidelines to the Secretary of Labor, for use in developing workplace safety standards under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. (c) Development and dissemination of model curriculum for emergency response employees (1) Within 90 days after November 4, 1988, the Secretary -- again through the CDC Director -- must develop a model training curriculum for emergency response employees, covering how to avoid exposure to the AIDS virus while responding to emergencies. (2) In building this curriculum, the Secretary must take the subsection (a) guidelines into account. (3) As much as practical, the curriculum must include: (A) information on how the AIDS virus spreads, and (B) information helping emergency workers tell the difference between situations where they're at risk and situations where they're not. (4) The Secretary must set up a task force to help build the curriculum, including representatives from the CDC, state governments, and emergency response employees. (5) The Secretary must: (A) send copies of the guidelines and curriculum to state public health officers, asking them to share the copies appropriately across the state, and (B) make the copies available to the public.
