Health plans and insurers must let members compare prices before getting care. They must offer phone help and a website tool that shows expected cost-sharing for a specific service from in-network providers, sorted by plan year and region. This is required wherever it's practical to provide.
A group health plan* or a health insurance issuer* offering group or individual health insurance coverage* must give members two ways to compare costs before they get care. It must offer price comparison help over the phone. And, as far as it is practical to do so, it must put a price comparison tool on its website. Using that tool, a member should be able to check — for a specific item or service*, for the current plan year, in a particular geographic region, and only among the plan's participating providers — how much cost-sharing* they would owe if they got that item or service from any one of those in-network providers.
A group health plan* or a health insurance issuer* offering group or individual health insurance coverage* shall offer price comparison guidance by telephone and make available on the Internet website of the plan or issuer a price comparison tool that (to the extent practicable) allows an individual enrolled under such plan or coverage, with respect to such plan year, such geographic region, and participating providers with respect to such plan or coverage, to compare the amount of cost-sharing* that the individual would be responsible for paying under such plan or coverage with respect to the furnishing of a specific item or service* by any such provider.
