An undocumented boat with an engine must get a number from its home state. The Secretary can also require large undocumented barges to be numbered.
(a) A vessel* that isn't documented (registered with the Coast Guard) but has any kind of engine must have a number, issued by the right authority in the state* where it's mainly used.
(b) The Secretary may also require an undocumented* barge* over 100 gross tons operating on U.S. navigable waters to be numbered.
An undocumented* vessel* equipped with propulsion machinery of any kind shall have a number issued by the proper issuing authority in the State* in which the vessel principally is operated.
The Secretary may require an undocumented barge* of more than 100 gross tons operating on the navigable waters of the United States to be numbered.
