46 U.S.C. § 14101 — Definitions

This section defines four terms used in this part of the law. (1) "Convention" means the International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships, 1969. (2) An "existing vessel^*" is one whose keel was laid, or that had reached a similar stage of construction, before July 18, 1982. (3) "Great Lakes" means both the Great Lakes themselves and the part of the St. Lawrence River west of two lines: a straight line from Cap des Rosiers to West Point on Anticosti Island, and, on the north side of Anticosti Island, the line of longitude 63 degrees west. (4) A "vessel that engages on a foreign voyage" is a vessel that does any of the following: arrives somewhere under U.S. jurisdiction from a foreign country; travels between two places outside the United States; leaves somewhere under U.S. jurisdiction headed to a foreign country; or travels between a place in a U.S. territory or possession and another place under U.S. jurisdiction that isn't in that same territory or possession.
