After measuring a vessel, the Secretary must give the owner an International Tonnage Certificate if the owner asks. For a vessel the Convention does not cover, the Secretary sets up a different certificate instead. The certificate must be kept up as the Secretary requires.
(a) After measuring a vessel* under this chapter, the Secretary must issue an International Tonnage Certificate (1969) if the owner asks, and deliver it to the owner or master. If the Convention does not apply to the vessel, the Secretary instead sets up a certificate to show the vessel's measurement under this chapter.
(b) The certificate must be kept up in the way the Secretary requires.
After measuring a vessel* under this chapter, the Secretary shall issue, on request of the owner, an International Tonnage Certificate (1969) and deliver it to the owner or master of the vessel. For a vessel to which the Convention does not apply, the Secretary shall prescribe a certificate to be issued as evidence of a vessel’s measurement under this chapter.
The certificate issued under this section shall be maintained as required by the Secretary.
