The Secretary must remeasure a vessel if the Secretary or the owner claims the earlier measurement was wrong, or if changes to the vessel affect its tonnage. Otherwise, a vessel already measured does not need to be measured again to get another document or endorsement.
(a) The Secretary must remeasure a covered vessel*, as needed, if: (1) the Secretary or the owner claims the earlier measurement had an error; or (2) the vessel or how its space is used changed in a way that substantially affects its tonnage.
(b) Except as this chapter or section 14504 provides, a vessel already measured does not need to be remeasured to get another document or endorsement under chapter 121.
To the extent necessary, the Secretary shall remeasure a vessel* to which this chapter applies if—
the Secretary or the owner alleges an error in its measurement; or
the vessel or the use of its space is changed in a way that substantially affects its tonnage.
Except as provided in this chapter or section 14504 of this title, a vessel that has been measured does not have to be remeasured to obtain another document or endorsement under chapter 121 of this title.
