46 U.S.C. § 14504 — Remeasurement

The Secretary must remeasure a covered vessel's tonnage in certain situations. These include a measurement error, a change affecting tonnage, or a shift between measurement subchapters. Otherwise, a measured vessel does not need remeasuring just to get a new document.
(a) The Secretary must, as needed, remeasure a vessel* covered by this chapter if: (1) the Secretary or the owner says there was an error in its measurement; (2) the vessel or how its space is used changes enough to significantly affect its tonnage; (3) after being measured under subchapter III, the vessel becomes subject to subchapter II because the vessel or its use changed; or (4) the vessel was not required to be measured under subchapter II but was measured under it anyway, and the owner now asks for it to instead be measured under subchapter III.
(b) Except as this section and chapter 143 of this title provide, a vessel that has already been measured does not have to be remeasured just to get another document or endorsement under chapter 121 of this title.
To the extent necessary, the Secretary shall remeasure a vessel* to which this chapter applies if—
the Secretary or the owner alleges an error in its measurement;
the vessel or the use of its space is changed in a way that substantially affects its tonnage;
after being measured under subchapter III of this chapter, the vessel becomes subject to subchapter II of this chapter because the vessel or its use is changed; or
although not required to be measured under subchapter II of this chapter, the vessel was measured under subchapter II and the owner requests that the vessel be measured under subchapter III of this chapter.
Except as provided in this section and chapter 143 of this title, a vessel that has been measured does not have to be remeasured to obtain another document or endorsement under chapter 121 of this title.
