46 U.S.C. § 50108 — Studies on cargo carriage and cargo containers

(a) Studies — The Secretary of Transportation must study (1) ways to encourage development and use of new concepts for carrying cargo in U.S. domestic and foreign commerce, and (2) the economic and technological sides of using cargo containers to carry out the policy in section 50101. (b) Restriction — In carrying out (a) and the policy in section 50101, the U.S. government may not favor one carrier over another based on the length, height, or width of cargo containers or cargo container cells. This restriction applies to every existing container vessel and any container vessel built or rebuilt in the future.
