46 U.S.C. § 57304 — Eligible acquisition dates

This law lets a vessel owner choose when the trade-in of their obsolete vessel actually happens under this chapter: either when they sign the contract to build or buy the new vessel, or within five days after the new vessel is actually delivered to them.
At the owner's choice, the trade-in of an obsolete vessel* under this chapter happens either: (1) when the owner signs a contract to build or buy the new vessel*; or (2) within five days after the new vessel* is actually delivered to the owner.
At the option of the owner, the acquisition of an obsolete vessel* under this chapter shall occur—
when the owner contracts for the construction or purchase of a new vessel*; or
within 5 days of the actual date of delivery of the new vessel* to the owner.
