49 U.S.C. § 30125 — Schoolbuses and schoolbus equipment

(a) Definitions. A "schoolbus" is a passenger vehicle built to carry a driver plus more than 10 passengers, that the Secretary of Transportation decides is likely to be used mainly to take pre-K, elementary, or secondary students to and from school or school events. "Schoolbus equipment" is equipment designed mainly for schoolbuses, or made or sold to replace, improve, or add to a schoolbus system, part, or component. (b) Safety standards. The Secretary must set minimum safety standards for schoolbuses and schoolbus equipment made in or imported into the United States. Those standards must cover, at minimum: emergency exits; protecting occupants from the vehicle's interior; floor strength; seating systems; how well the body and frame survive a crash (including rollover protection); vehicle operating systems; windows and windshields; and fuel systems. (c) Test-driving. The Secretary can require, by regulation, that a manufacturer test-drive a schoolbus before selling it.
