49 U.S.C. § 30129 — Crash avoidance technology

(a) In general. The Secretary of Transportation must issue a rule that (1) sets minimum performance standards for crash-avoidance technology, and (2) requires all new passenger motor vehicles made for U.S. sale, starting on the compliance date described in subsection (b), to be equipped with: (A) a forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking system that (i) alerts the driver if the distance to a vehicle or object ahead is closing too quickly and a crash is about to happen, and (ii) automatically applies the brakes if the driver does not; and (B) a lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist system that (i) warns the driver to stay in the lane of travel, and (ii) corrects the vehicle's course if the driver does not. (b) Compliance date. The Secretary of Transportation decides the appropriate effective date, and any phase-in schedule, for the final rule issued under subsection (a).
