In this division, an "Indian tribe" is an Indian tribe, band, nation, or other organized group or community — including certain Alaska Native corporations — recognized as eligible for the special federal programs and services the United States gives to Indians.
In this division, the term "Indian tribe" means an Indian tribe, band, nation, or other organized group or community. This includes a Native village, Regional Corporation, or Village Corporation, as those terms are defined in section 3 of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (43 U.S.C. 1602). To count, the group must be recognized as eligible for the special programs and services the United States provides to Indians because of their status as Indians.
