54 U.S.C. § 302701 — Program to assist Indian tribes in preserving historic property

(a) Setting up the program. The Secretary^* must create a program, with regulations, to help Indian tribes preserve their historic property^*.

(b) Communication and cooperation. The Secretary must build communication and cooperation between Indian tribes and State^* Historic Preservation^* Officers in running the national historic preservation^* program, in order to (1) make sure every kind of historic property and every public interest in it gets fair consideration, and (2) encourage Indian tribes, State Historic Preservation Officers, and Federal agencies to coordinate on preservation planning and on identifying, evaluating, protecting, and interpreting historic property.

(c) Tribal values. The program must be built so that tribal values are considered as much as possible. The Secretary may waive or change requirements of this subdivision to fit the cultural setting of a tribe's own heritage preservation goals.

(d) Scope of tribal programs. Each tribe's own governing authority decides how broad its tribal preservation program will be.

(e) Consultation. The Secretary must consult with Indian tribes, other Federal agencies, State Historic Preservation Officers, and other interested parties about this program.
