6 U.S.C. § 124d — Intelligence components

This section is subject to the direction and control of the Secretary, and must follow any applicable guidance from the Director of National Intelligence. It lists seven responsibilities for the head of each intelligence unit ("component") of the Department: (1) Make sure that collecting, processing, analyzing, and sharing information covered by the information sharing environment — including homeland security information, terrorism information, weapons of mass destruction information, and "national intelligence" (as defined in section 3003(5) of title 50) — happens effectively and efficiently, in support of the Department's intelligence mission led by the Under Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis. (2) Otherwise support and carry out the Department's intelligence mission, as led by the Under Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis. (3) Fold in the Under Secretary's input when making decisions about performance appraisals, bonus or award recommendations, pay adjustments, and other forms of commendation for their employees. (4) Coordinate with the Under Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis when developing policies and requirements for recruiting and selecting intelligence officials for their unit. (5) Advise and coordinate with the Under Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis on any plan to reorganize or restructure their unit that would, if carried out, realign intelligence functions. (6) Make sure their unit's employees know about, and comply with, the programs and policies the Under Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis and other appropriate Department officials have established, and that employees comply with all applicable laws and regulations. (7) Carry out any other activities related to these responsibilities that the Secretary assigns.
