6 U.S.C. § 195g — Countering Unmanned Aircraft Systems Coordinator

(a) Coordinator: (1) The Secretary must designate someone in a Senior Executive Service position within the Office of Strategy, Policy, and Plans to be the Countering Unmanned Aircraft Systems Coordinator (called "the Coordinator"), and give that person appropriate staff. (2) The Coordinator must: (A) oversee and coordinate with relevant Department offices, including the Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties and the Privacy Office, on developing guidance and regulations to counter threats from unmanned aircraft systems ("UAS"), as described in section 124n of this title; (B) promote research and development of counter-UAS technologies, coordinating with the Science and Technology Directorate; (C) coordinate with relevant Department components and offices, including the Office of Intelligence and Analysis, to ensure the sharing of information, guidance, and intelligence about countering UAS threats, counter-UAS threat assessments, and counter-UAS technology, including keeping records of UAS and counter-UAS incidents; (D) serve as the Department's liaison, coordinating with relevant Department components and offices, to the Department of Defense, federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement, and the private sector, on the Department's counter-UAS activities; (E) maintain the information required under section 124n(g)(3) of this title; and (F) carry out other related counter-UAS authorities and activities under section 124n of this title, as the Secretary directs. (b) Coordination with applicable Federal laws: In addition to other duties, the Coordinator must coordinate with relevant Department components and offices to make sure any testing, evaluation, or deployment of a system used to identify, assess, or defeat a UAS follows applicable federal laws. (c) Coordination with private sector: Among other duties, the Coordinator, working with the Office of Partnership and Engagement and other relevant Department offices and components, or other federal agencies as appropriate, serves as the Department's principal official for sharing counter-UAS technology information with the private sector — particularly information about cases where counter-UAS technology could affect lawful private-sector services or systems.
