6 U.S.C. § 321q — Coordination of Department of Homeland Security efforts related to food, agriculture, and veterinary defense against terrorism

(a) Program required. The Secretary, acting through the Assistant Secretary for the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office, must run a program that coordinates the Department's work defending the food, agriculture, and veterinary systems of the United States against terrorism and other major events that pose a high risk to homeland security. (b) Program elements. This coordination program must, at a minimum: oversee and manage the Department's duties under Homeland Security Presidential Directive 9, on defending U.S. agriculture and food; oversee and connect the Department's work on veterinary public health, food defense, and agricultural security; lead the Department's policy on food, animal, and agricultural incidents and how they affect animal and public health; lead the Department's policy on preparing for and responding to agricultural terrorism; coordinate with other parts of the Department, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, on food and agriculture security and on screening domestic and imported products; coordinate with the right federal departments and agencies; and carry out any other activity the Secretary decides is necessary. (c) Rule of construction. This section does not change or override the authority of the Secretary of Agriculture or the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
