6 U.S.C. § 459 — Office of International Affairs

(a) Establishment: This section creates an Office of International Affairs inside the Office of the Secretary. A Director, who is a senior official the Secretary appoints, heads the Office. (b) Duties of the Director: The Director has these duties: (1) Promote exchanging information and education with nations friendly to the United States, to share best practices and technologies for homeland security. This exchange must include: (A) sharing research and development on homeland security technology; (B) joint training exercises for first responders; and (C) sharing expertise on preventing terrorism, responding to it, and managing crises. (2) Identify areas where the U.S. has a clear weakness in homeland security, and where a friendly nation has clear expertise, so information and training can flow between them. (3) Plan and carry out international conferences, exchange programs, and training activities. (4) Manage the Department's international activities, working with other federal officials responsible for counter-terrorism matters.
