42 U.S.C. § 274i — Eligibility requirements for Stephanie Tubbs Jones Gift of Life Medal

(a) In general: Subject to this section and to funds being available under this part, any organ donor, or the family of an organ donor, is eligible for a Stephanie Tubbs Jones Gift of Life Medal (called a "medal" in this part). (b) Documentation: The Secretary of Health and Human Services must direct the entity running the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network to: (1) set up an application process where the organ procurement organization involved in a donation submits documentation supporting the donor's or family's eligibility for a medal; (2) decide, from that documentation and, if needed, its own investigation, whether the individual or family qualifies; and (3) arrange to give medals struck under section 274i–2 to the organ procurement organization, for delivery to eligible individuals or families. (c) Limitation: (1) Generally, only one medal may go to a family. It goes to the donating family member — or, for a deceased donor, to whichever family member signed the consent form (or otherwise authorized the donation). (2) Exception: if more than one member of a family donated an organ, a medal may be given for each donor.
