This law funds training programs to prepare people to care for elderly patients. The Secretary gives grants to nursing schools, health facilities, and similar groups. Grant money can pay for training, curricula, faculty development, and continuing education.
(a) Program authorized
The Secretary* must give grants to eligible organizations to build and run programs — working together with programs under section 294c — that train people to care for elderly patients.
(b) Use of funds
A group that gets a grant must use the money to: (1) train people who will give geriatric care; (2) create and share teaching materials on treating elderly patients' health problems; (3) train faculty in geriatrics; (4) offer continuing education to people who already give geriatric care; or (5) set up training positions for people working toward advanced nursing degrees in geriatric nursing, long-term care, gero-psychiatric nursing, or other nursing fields focused on elderly care.
(c) Application
A group that wants a grant must apply to the Secretary, following whatever timing, format, and information requirements the Secretary reasonably sets.
(d) Eligible entity
This includes a nursing school, a health care facility*, a certified-nurse-assistant certification program, or a partnership between such a school or program and a facility.
(e) Authorization of appropriations
Congress may spend whatever money is needed to run this program for each fiscal year from 2010 through 2014.
The Secretary* shall award grants to eligible entities* to develop and implement, in coordination with programs under section 294c of this title, programs and initiatives to train and educate individuals in providing geriatric care for the elderly.
An eligible entity that receives a grant under subsection (a) shall use funds under such grant to—
provide training to individuals who will provide geriatric care for the elderly;
develop and disseminate curricula relating to the treatment* of the health problems of elderly individuals;
train faculty members in geriatrics;
provide continuing education to individuals who provide geriatric care; or
establish traineeships for individuals who are preparing for advanced education nursing degrees in geriatric nursing, long-term care, gero-psychiatric nursing or other nursing areas that specialize in the care of the elderly population.
An eligible entity desiring a grant under subsection (a) shall submit an application to the Secretary at such time, in such manner, and containing such information as the Secretary may reasonably require.
For purposes of this section, the term “eligible entity” includes a school of nursing*, a health care facility*, a program leading to certification as a certified nurse assistant, a partnership of such a school and facility, or a partnership of such a program and facility.
There are authorized to be appropriated to carry out this section such sums as may be necessary for each of fiscal years 2010 through 2014.
