10 U.S.C. § 6176 — Defense environmental cleanup technology program

(a) The Secretary must establish and carry out research to develop technologies useful for (1) reducing environmental hazards and contamination from defense waste and (2) restoring inactive defense-waste disposal sites. (b) Definitions: (1) “Defense waste” means waste, including radioactive waste, resulting mainly from the Department of Energy’s atomic-energy defense activities. (2) “Inactive defense waste disposal site” means a site, including a facility, under the Secretary’s control or jurisdiction that is used to dispose of defense waste and closed to additional defense waste, including a site undergoing decontamination and decommissioning.
