10 U.S.C. § 7414 — Degree granting authority for United States Army Command and General Staff College

(a) Authority. Under Army^* Secretary regulations, the Commandant of the United States Army Command and General Staff College may, on the faculty’s and dean’s recommendation, confer appropriate degrees on graduates who meet the degree requirements.
(b) Limitation. A degree may be conferred only if (1) the Secretary of Education recommends approval under the Federal Policy Governing Granting of Academic Degrees by Federal Agencies, and (2) the College is accredited by the appropriate civilian academic accrediting agency or organization to award the degree, as determined by the Secretary of Education.
(c) Congressional Notification Requirements. (1) When seeking to establish degree-granting authority, the Secretary of Defense must give the Senate and House Armed Services Committees (A) the self-assessment questionnaire required by that Federal policy when it is submitted to the Department of Education’s National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity, and (B) the Secretary of Education’s later recommendations and reasons about establishing the authority. (2) When existing degree-granting authority is modified or redesignated, the Secretary of Defense must report to those committees the reasons for the proposed change and any later Education Secretary recommendation. (3) The Secretary of Defense must report to those committees why the appropriate academic accreditor did not accredit the College to award any new or existing degree.
