10 U.S.C. § 7715 — Army museum system

(a) In general: The Secretary of the Army must support a system of official Army museums under the U.S. Army Center of Military History. This system includes the National Museum of the United States Army and may include other museums honoring specific installations, units, or branches, if the Secretary designates them and they meet the criteria in (b). (b) Criteria for designation: The Secretary must set criteria for adding museums to the system, including (1) historical importance to Army operations, technology, or personnel; (2) how accessible the museum is to the public and its educational outreach; and (3) how well it fits the Army's mission to preserve its heritage. (c) Criteria for closure: The Secretary must set criteria for closing museums in the system. A museum cannot close until (1) the Secretary sends the House and Senate Armed Services Committees notice including (A) a plan to preserve, store, or display the historical collections elsewhere, (B) how personnel issues will be handled, (C) any efforts to keep the museum running through public-private partnerships, and (D) a cost analysis for moving, consolidating, and preserving the collections; and (2) 90 days have passed since the committees got that notice. (d) Funding and support: Consistent with the law, the Secretary may partner with organizations, including nonprofits, to help fund the museums and boost public engagement.
