The Navy may give aircrew and civilian workers a flight ration during flight duty. This ration comes on top of their normal food allowance. Nobody already getting travel per diem for meals can get a free flight ration.
This law lets the Navy and Marine Corps pay* for an aircraft flight ration for members of the naval service and civilian employees of the Department of the Navy. The ration is available only while they are actually doing flight operations, and it is charged to the correct Navy or Marine Corps appropriation. The flight ration adds to any other food allowance the person already gets; it doesn't replace it. However, the flight ration cannot be given for free to someone who is traveling and being paid a per diem instead of a regular food allowance.
An aircraft flight ration chargeable to the proper Navy or Marine Corps appropriation may be furnished to members of the naval service and to civilian employees of the Department of the Navy while engaged in flight operations. The flight ration is supplementary to any ration or subsistence allowance to which the members or employees are otherwise entitled. However, the flight ration may not be furnished without charge to any person in a travel status or to any person to whom a per diem allowance is granted in place of subsistence.
