16 U.S.C. § 231b — Acceptance of donations

This section lets the Secretary of the Interior get land, buildings, and other property for the Chalmette Unit of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. "Chalmette Unit" means the specific area whose boundaries this subchapter fixes and determines. The Secretary can get this property three ways: through donations, by buying it at a price the Secretary considers reasonable, or by condemnation — a legal process for taking private property for public use — carried out under section 3113 of title 40. This covers land, buildings, structures, and other property, or lesser interests in that property, such as easements. The Secretary decides whether to do this ("in his discretion") and must be satisfied that the title — legal ownership — being transferred is good. The Secretary may also accept donations of money to pay for acquiring and maintaining this property. There's an important limit: the law says payment for the property or interests "shall be made solely from donated funds." That means the Secretary cannot use regular government money to pay for this land — only money that people or organizations donate for this purpose.
