16 U.S.C. § 8101 — Findings and purposes

(a) Congress found these facts: (1) Wetlands, tidal marshes, and farmland give the country important cultural, economic, and environmental benefits. (2) The South American nutria, an animal, is directly causing major loss of marshland on federal, state, and private land. (3) Older ways of hunting or trapping nutria have not worked to control or wipe them out. Because of this, the country is losing marshes, wetlands, and farmland faster and faster. (4) A pilot program to eradicate nutria, created by Public Law 105–322, is meant to find new and better ways to eliminate them. (b) The purpose of this chapter is to let the Secretary of the Interior give money to any state that shows it needs a program to eradicate or control nutria and to restore marshland the nutria have damaged.
