16 U.S.C. § 8102 — Nutria eradication program

(a) The Secretary of the Interior may give financial assistance to a state — in an amount tied to how much of that state's area is affected by nutria — if the state has shown enough need for a program to eradicate or control nutria and restore marshland, wetlands, and farmland the nutria have damaged. (b) In Maryland specifically, the Secretary must require the program to include management, research, and public education activities that follow the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's document called "Eradication Strategies for Nutria in the Chesapeake and Delaware Bay Watersheds," dated March 2002. (c) Cost sharing: (1) The federal government's share of a state program's costs cannot be more than 75 percent of the total. (2) The state's share of the costs can be paid through in-kind contributions — materials or services instead of cash. (d) No more than 5 percent of the financial assistance given to a state may be spent on administrative expenses. (e) Congress authorized $12,000,000 to be appropriated for this financial assistance for each of fiscal years 2021 through 2025.
