25 U.S.C. § 272 — Superintendent of Indian schools

The President appoints a Superintendent of Indian Schools, with the advice and consent of the Senate. This person must have knowledge and experience in managing, training, and practically educating children. The Superintendent's duty is to visit and inspect schools that teach Indian students, whole or in part, using money appropriated from the United States Treasury. The Superintendent reports to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, describing whatever defects, in the Superintendent's judgment, exist in those schools' system, administration, or methods for helping students advance — the statute uses the phrase "toward civilization and self-support," a phrase this section does not further define — and recommending the changes needed to fix those defects. The Superintendent also performs any other duties connected with Indian schools that the Secretary of the Interior may assign.
