To become federally recognized as an enlisted member of the National Guard, a person must meet the qualifications the relevant Secretary sets for that grade, branch, position, and type of unit. Federal recognition begins as soon as the person enlists in a federally recognized National Guard unit.

To be eligible for federal recognition as an enlisted member of the National Guard, a person must have the qualifications the Secretary concerned sets for the grade, branch, position, and type of unit or organization involved. The person becomes federally recognized as soon as they enlist in a federally recognized unit or organization of the National Guard.
To be eligible for Federal recognition as an enlisted member of the National Guard, a person must have the qualifications prescribed by the Secretary concerned for the grade, branch, position, and type of unit or organization involved. He becomes federally recognized upon enlisting in a federally recognized unit or organization of the National Guard.
