This section directs surveys and technical help for rehabilitating existing sites for hydroelectric use when local officials request them. The federal and nonfederal governments share costs equally, and it authorizes specified annual funding.
(a) Survey authority. At local public officials’ request, the Secretary must survey the potential and methods for rehabilitating former industrial sites, millraces, and similar existing facilities for hydroelectric use. On request, the Secretary must give local public agencies, including electric cooperatives, technical help designing projects for surveyed or survey-qualified sites. The nonfederal share is 50 percent of the cost.
(b) Funding. Up to $5,000,000 may be appropriated to the Secretary for each fiscal year ending September 30, 1988 through September 30, 1992. The money remains available until spent.
The Secretary shall, upon the request of local public officials, survey the potential and methods for rehabilitating former industrial sites, millraces, and similar types of facilities already constructed for use as hydroelectric facilities. The Secretary shall, upon request, provide technical assistance to local public agencies, including electric cooperatives, in designing projects to rehabilitate sites that have been surveyed, or are qualified for such survey, under this section. The non-Federal share of the cost of carrying out this section shall be 50 percent.
There is authorized to be appropriated to the Secretary, to implement this section, the sum of $5,000,000 for each of the fiscal years ending September 30, 1988, through September 30, 1992, such sums to remain available until expended.
