36 U.S.C. § 116 — Memorial Day

The last Monday in May is Memorial Day. The President is asked to issue a yearly proclamation about it. That proclamation should call for a period of prayer for permanent peace.
(a) Designation — The last Monday in May is Memorial Day.
(b) Proclamation — The President is asked (not required) to issue a proclamation each year that: (1) calls on Americans to observe Memorial Day by praying, in their own religious way, for lasting peace; (2) sets aside a specific period of time on Memorial Day for that shared prayer; (3) calls on Americans to join in prayer during that period; and (4) calls on the media to help promote observing Memorial Day and its period of prayer.
The last Monday in May is Memorial Day.
The President is requested to issue each year a proclamation—
calling on the people of the United States to observe Memorial Day by praying, according to their individual religious faith, for permanent peace;
designating a period of time on Memorial Day during which the people may unite in prayer for a permanent peace;
calling on the people of the United States to unite in prayer at that time; and
calling on the media to join in observing Memorial Day and the period of prayer.
