36 U.S.C. § 153102 — Purposes

The corporation's purposes are patriotic, historical, and educational, and include five things. First, it perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. It does this by acquiring and protecting historical sites and building monuments; encouraging and publishing historical research about the Revolution; preserving documents, relics, and records of individual Revolutionary soldiers and patriots; and promoting celebrations of patriotic anniversaries. Second, it carries out George Washington's call, in his farewell address, 'to promote, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge' — building an informed public and giving young and old people the tools to be good American citizens. Third, it cherishes, maintains, and extends the institutions of American freedom. Fourth, it fosters true patriotism and love of country. Fifth, it helps secure the blessings of liberty for all people.
