36 U.S.C. § 190104 — Governing body

(a) National Convention. The corporation must hold a national convention every year. Delegates elected by the various departments make up this convention. (b) National Executive Committee. The national executive committee runs the corporation. It is made up of the president, the president-elect, the last past president, three vice presidents, three junior vice presidents, at least three other national executive committee members, and the executive director. Everyone on this list gets one vote on committee matters, except the president-elect and the executive director. (c) Officers. The corporation's officers are: a president, a president-elect, three vice presidents, three junior vice presidents, at least three national executive committee members, an executive director, a national treasurer, a judge advocate, and any other officers named in the corporation's constitution. Most national officers are elected at the annual convention and take office there. The exceptions are the executive director, national treasurer, judge advocate, and any other officers the constitution names as appointed — the national executive committee appoints these instead. Elected officers serve for one year, or until their successors are elected and qualify. (d) Vacancies. If a seat opens up on the national executive committee — other than president, president-elect, or last past president — the committee's remaining members fill it themselves. Whoever they appoint serves only until the next national convention, where members elect someone to serve out whatever time is left in the term. If the president is absent, or the presidency itself is vacant, the vice president from the same military service as the president temporarily acts as president.
