42 U.S.C. § 12616 — Training

(a) Basic training for everyone. Each Corps^* member gets three to six weeks of training. It covers a full service-learning^* curriculum meant to build teamwork, discipline, leadership, work skills, citizenship, and physical fitness. Wherever practical, the Director^* must make sure each member learns CPR, first aid, and other disaster-preparedness and response skills.

(b) Advanced training.
(1) National service members get advanced training in basic, project^*-specific skills for their community service work — such as energy conservation, environmental stewardship, infrastructure improvement, urban and rural development, or disaster preparedness, whichever fits their project.
(2) Summer national service members don't get that advanced training, but may get other training where practical.

(c) Who trains members.
(1) Members of the cadre appointed under section 12619(c)(2) provide training, including advanced service training and ongoing training throughout members' service.
(2) Cadre members can provide advanced training — directly, or through grants, contracts, or cooperative agreements — working with vocational or technical schools, other training providers, existing youth service programs, other qualified people, or organizations skilled at training youth, including disadvantaged youth^*.

(d) Where training happens. Training may happen at Department of Defense installations and facilities, and at National Guard facilities, identified under section 12622(c).
