42 U.S.C. § 17302 — Prohibition on false information

This section makes it unlawful to knowingly or recklessly report required wholesale-price information that is false or misleading. The person must also intend that it affect agency statistics or analysis of the relevant market.
A person may not report wholesale-price information about crude oil, gasoline, or petroleum distillates to a federal department or agency when (1) the person knew or reasonably should have known it was false or misleading; (2) law required the report; and (3) the person intended it to affect information compiled for statistical or analytical purposes about those markets.
It is unlawful for any person to report information related to the wholesale price of crude oil 1 gasoline or petroleum distillates to a Federal department or agency if—
the person knew, or reasonably should have known, the information to be false or misleading;
the information was required by law to be reported; and
the person intended the false or misleading data to affect data compiled by the department or agency for statistical or analytical purposes with respect to the market for crude oil, gasoline, or petroleum distillates.
