Congress restates its policy on tracking asteroids and comets that pass near Earth. By September 30, 2012, the White House science office must set up a way to warn federal agencies and emergency responders if one of these objects threatens public safety soon. It must also assign an agency to protect the country and work with other nations on the threat.
(a) Policy reaffirmation. Congress restates the policy already set out in section 20102(g) of title 51, about surveying near-Earth asteroids and comets.
(b) Implementation. Before September 30, 2012, the Director* of the Office of Science and Technology Policy must put in place a policy for warning federal agencies and emergency response groups if a near-Earth object threatens public safety soon. That policy must also assign a federal agency, or agencies, to protect the United States and to work with other countries on this kind of threat.
Congress reaffirms the policy set forth in section 20102(g) of title 51 relating to surveying near-Earth asteroids and comets.
The Director* of the OSTP* shall implement, before September 30, 2012, a policy for notifying Federal agencies and relevant emergency response institutions of an impending near-Earth object threat if near-term public safety is at risk, and assign a Federal agency or agencies to be responsible for protecting the United States and working with the international community on such threats.
