If the Director of the Government Publishing Office dies, resigns, or is absent or sick, the Deputy Director takes over their duties until a successor is named or the Director returns. The President can instead assign another Senate-confirmed officer to fill in. A vacancy from death or resignation can only be filled temporarily for up to ten days, unless it happens while the Senate is in recess.
This section has no lettered subsections. It sets rules for who runs the Government Publishing Office when the Director cannot.
In case of the death, resignation, absence, or sickness of the Director of the Government Publishing Office, the Deputy Director of the Government Publishing Office performs the duties of the Director until a successor is appointed, or until the Director's absence or sickness ends. Instead, the President may direct any other officer of the Government whose appointment is subject to Senate confirmation to perform those duties until a successor is appointed, or until the Director's sickness or absence ends.
A vacancy caused by death or resignation cannot be filled temporarily under this section for longer than ten days. A temporary appointment, designation, or assignment of another officer under this section cannot be made except to fill a vacancy that happens during a recess of the Senate.
In case of the death, resignation, absence, or sickness of the Director of the Government Publishing Office, the Deputy Director of the Government Publishing Office shall perform the duties of the Director of the Government Publishing Office until a successor is appointed or the Director’s absence or sickness ceases; but the President may direct any other officer of the Government, whose appointment is vested in the President by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, to perform the duties of the vacant office until a successor is appointed, or the sickness or absence of the Director of the Government Publishing Office ceases. A vacancy occasioned by death or resignation may not be filled temporarily under this section for longer than ten days, and a temporary appointment, designation, or assignment of another officer may not be made except to fill a vacancy happening during a recess of the Senate.
