46 U.S.C. § 12308 — Providing vessel numbering and registration information

Anyone can ask the numbering authority for a boat's numbering and registration records. If the request is reasonable and about boating safety, the authority must provide it. The requester must pay the cost of retrieving that information.
A person can ask the authority that issued a boat's number for the numbering and registration information about that vessel*, as far as it's retrievable from that authority's records. If the issuing authority is satisfied the request is reasonable and relates to a boating safety purpose, it must provide the information once the requester pays the cost of retrieving and providing it.
A person may request from an authority issuing a number under this chapter the numbering and registration information of a vessel* that is retrievable from vessel numbering system records of the issuing authority. When the issuing authority is satisfied that the request is reasonable and related to a boating safety purpose, the information shall be provided on paying the cost of retrieving and providing the information requested.
