The Secretary of Transportation may give a free U.S. flag and grave marker to certain families. This applies when a deceased merchant mariner served alongside the armed forces during a war or emergency.
Unless another law already covers it, the Secretary of Transportation may give, at no cost, a U.S. flag and a grave marker to the family or personal representative of a deceased person who served in the merchant marine in support of the U.S. armed forces or their allies during a war or national emergency.
Except as authorized under another law, the Secretary of Transportation may issue, at no cost, a flag of the United States and a grave marker to the family or personal representative of a deceased individual who served in the merchant marine of the United States in support of the armed forces of the United States or its allies during a war or national emergency.
