6 U.S.C. § 727 — Improvements to information technology systems

(a) Measures. The Administrator^*, coordinating with the Department’s Chief Information Officer, must take appropriate steps to update and improve the Agency’s information systems, including steps to (1) make the Agency’s systems—including the National Emergency Management^* Information System, Logistics Information Management System III, and Automated Deployment Database—as compatible as practicable so they can share and access information; (2) deliver technology improvements promptly to headquarters and regional offices for seamless integration; (3) maintain a testing environment that thoroughly tests every system component before release; (4) give systems capacity to track disaster-response personnel, mission-assignment task orders, commodities, and supplies used for natural disasters, terrorism, or other man-made disasters; (5) improve the National Emergency^* Management Information System to address its October 4, 2006 shortcomings; and (6) provide personnel, including disaster-response personnel, training, manuals, and guidance so they can use the systems properly. (b) Report. Within 270 days after October 4, 2006, the Administrator must send the appropriate congressional committees a report describing implementation, actions taken, improvements made, remaining problems, and additional funding needed for necessary improvements.
