The Secretary must represent low-income people in national food surveys and, where practicable, collect their food-purchase and household-spending information. The Secretary must maintain the nutrient database where practicable and encourage related research.
The Secretary* of Agriculture shall— (1) in the Department’s continuing individual-food-intake survey and any nationwide food-consumption survey, include a sample representing low-income people and, as far as practicable, collect their food-purchase and other household-expenditure information; (2) as far as practicable, continue maintaining the Department’s nutrient database; and (3) encourage public and private research on standards, methods, and technologies for accurately assessing nutritional and dietary status.
The Secretary* of Agriculture shall—
in conducting the Department of Agriculture’s continuing survey of food intakes of individuals and any nationwide food consumption survey, include a sample that is representative of low-income individuals and, to the extent practicable, the collection of information on food purchases and other household expenditures by such individuals;
to the extent practicable, continue to maintain the nutrient data base established by the Department of Agriculture*; and
encourage research by public and private entities relating to effective standards, methodologies, and technologies for accurate assessment of the nutritional and dietary status of individuals.
