16 U.S.C. § 410hhh–8 — Advisory Council

(a) Establishment The Secretary must set up an advisory council called the "Great Sand Dunes National Park Advisory Council." (b) Duties The Advisory Council advises the Secretary on preparing and carrying out a management plan for the park and preserve. (c) Members The Advisory Council has 10 members, appointed by the Secretary: (1) one from, or nominated by, the Alamosa County Commission; (2) one from, or nominated by, the Saguache County Commission; (3) one from, or nominated by, the Friends of the Dunes Organization; and (4) four people living in or near the San Luis Valley plus three from the general public, all with backgrounds reflecting (A) the reasons the park and preserve were created, and (B) the interests of people affected by the park's and preserve's planning and management. (d) Applicable law The Advisory Council must operate under chapter 10 of title 5 and other applicable laws. (e) Vacancy A vacancy is filled the same way the original appointment was made. (f) Chairperson The Advisory Council elects its own chairperson and sets its own rules and procedures. (g) No compensation Members serve without pay. (h) Termination The Advisory Council ends once the management plan for the park and preserve is complete.
