20 U.S.C. § 80r–2 — Establishment of Museum

(a) Establishment: The law creates a museum within the Smithsonian Institution, called the "National Museum of African American History and Culture." (b) Purpose: The Museum's purpose is to provide for: (1) collecting, studying, and running programs about African American life, art, history, and culture, covering (A) the period of slavery, (B) the era of Reconstruction, (C) the Harlem Renaissance, (D) the civil rights movement, and (E) other periods of the African American diaspora; (2) creating permanent and temporary exhibits documenting the history of slavery in America and African American life, art, history, and culture during those periods; (3) collecting and studying artifacts and documents related to African American life, art, history, and culture; and (4) working with other museums, historically Black colleges and universities, historical societies, educational institutions, and other groups that promote studying or appreciating African American life, art, history, or culture — including working together on (A) joint programs and exhibits, (B) identifying, managing, and caring for collections, and (C) training museum professionals.
